Ponmudi Attractions and Activities

Ponmudi is a mosaic of natural and man-made attractions, offering something for everyone—from leisure travelers and photographers to trekkers and adventure seekers.

1. Golden Valley

Located near the Kallar River, the Golden Valley is a serene spot ideal for relaxing picnics and short hikes. The name is derived from the golden hue that graces the landscape during sunrise and sunset, creating an ethereal experience.

2. Meenmutty Waterfalls

Accessible via a 2-kilometer trek through thick forests, these falls are an absolute treat, especially during the monsoon. Unlike its namesake in Wayanad, this Meenmutty Falls is lesser-known and offers a quieter, more intimate experience.

3. Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary

A great spot for ecotourism and wildlife spotting, this sanctuary is part of the Neyyar River basin and offers guided tours and birding opportunities.

4. Agasthyarkoodam Peak

The second-highest peak in Kerala (1,868 meters), Agasthyarkoodam is sacred to both nature lovers and pilgrims. A challenging trek—allowed only with special permission—leads to the summit, passing through orchid-filled forests and herbal groves.

5. Trekking and Hiking

Ponmudi boasts some of Kerala’s most scenic trekking trails. One of the most popular is the Varayadumotta trail, a rugged 18-kilometer ridge trek known for sightings of the endangered Nilgiri tahr (mountain goat).
